- Liming: Alkali solutions (like lime) are used to loosen hair and prepare the hide.
- Unhairing: Excess hair and tissues are removed through scraping or other methods.
- Deliming: Lime is removed from the hide.
- Bating: Enzymes are used to soften the hide and prepare it for tanning.
- Pickling: Hides are soaked in acidic solutions (often sulfuric acid and formic acid) to prepare them for tanning.
Tanning:
- Tanning: This is the core process where tanning agents (like chromium salts or vegetable tannins) are used to stabilize the collagen fibers.
- Chromium Tanning: Chromium sulfate is commonly used to produce a flexible and durable leather.
- Vegetable Tanning: Uses plant-based tannins (like from oak bark) for a different type of leather.
Finishing:
- Drying: Water is evaporated to create a dry leather product.
- Dyeing: Dyes are applied to give the leather color.
- Fat Liquoring: Oils and greases are added to improve softness and water resistance.
- Finishing: Coatings and treatments are applied to enhance appearance and durability.
